Mineral Species: Labradorite (Semi-precious gemstone formed 1.3 billion yrs ago.)

Location of origin: Grenfell Quarry, Tabor Island (originally Napotulagatsuk Island: meaning island with a shining light) 16 km south of Nain, Labrador, province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Description: specimen collected by the late Heward (Pete) Peters (prospector/ MUN geology professor) in 1961. Labradorescence: direction(s): 1, di colour: medium blue and green-yellow. Distinctive Northern Labrador source characteristics: small white quartz areas with intermittent black hornblende mixed into (relatively) non-grey labradorite showing strong labradorescence. Also subtle aurora lattice (aventurescence) present. Polished one face askew to twinning/layers (sealed at 280 grit, polished to 50,000 grit) by D L Hayashida at King's Point, NL, Canada.
